Worker in hospital after fall

A WORKER is in hospital with a serious head injury following a fall at the site of a college’s new build

 

The 33-year-old man suffered a serious head injury after falling six foot from a step ladder at Furness College’s £41m new building on Monday.


He was taken to Furness General Hospital by ambulance but was transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital, which specialises in head injury treatment.


The Health and Safety Executive has confirmed it is making inquiries into the incident, which happened at around 9.30am at the college in Channelside, Barrow.


A spokesman for the HSE said: “A worker has fallen from a step ladder from around six foot.

“He has banged his head and suffered quite a serious head injury.

He was taken to Furness General Hospital but was transferred to the Royal Preston Hospital.

The Health and Safety Executive is making inquiries.

A spokeswoman for the North West Ambulance Service NHS Trust said: “We were called to Furness College at 9.40am on December 5 to a 33-year-old man who has fallen from a ladder and had suffered a head injury.

“He was taken to Furness General Hospital.”

The Evening Mail contacted Eric Wright Construction, the main contractor at the site.

Simon Milligan, project manager for Eric Wright Construction site team, said the incident was still being investigated so he was unable to comment.


Anne Attwood, principal of Furness College, said: “The college was informed on Monday that there had been an accident on site. We understand that it is currently being investigated.”

The new building is due to be handed over by the contractor to Furness College leaders on December 19 and the students are set to move in the New Year.
