Shattered Lives Campaign Phase 3

Posted: Monday, 01 February, 2010

Shattered Lives Phase 3 - STEP and WAIT - will launch on Monday 1st February 2010, for a 5-week campaign period, finishing on the 5th March.

Phase 3 will sustain the momentum of the previous ‘Shattered Lives’ campaigns. This will be done by re-running existing press, and on-line advertisements with supporting publicity. We will promote our two e-tools, the Slips and Trips eLearning Package (STEP) and our new e-tool, the Work at height Access equipment Information Toolkit (WAIT).

The first few weeks of the Phase 3 campaign will focus on management of slip and trip risks and promotion of ‘STEP’ and the latter period on risks associated with falls from height and the ‘WAIT toolkit’.

We would welcome help from Local Authority colleagues in promoting action in the workplace through the Shattered Lives messages and encouraging people to access our e-tools STEP and WAIT.

STEP

STEP is an e-tool providing slip and trip guidance through interactive learning. It is an easy way to learn about slips and trips, their causes, how to prevent them and why stopping them is important. To enhance the learning experience STEP includes quizzes, videos, animations and interactive sequences. The package provides practical guidance and learning that will, if put into practice, help successfully tackle slips and trips in the workplace.

However, STEP is meant to supplement Health and Safety learning, not replace it. It should therefore be used in conjunction with other HSE slip and trip guidance and tools.

There are many additional resources available on STEP:

  • Presentations that can be used to train general workers, cleaning staff and maintenance workers.
  • A quiz that will allow users to check their understanding of slips and trips following completion of the introductory level course.
  • Several additional Slip and Trip Guidance notes on Cleaning, Flooring, Footwear and general issues. There are specific guidance notes, good practice guides and top tips, for example, to help prevent slips in kitchens.

WAIT Toolkit

WAIT has been developed to help people who are required to work at height, understand what the key issues are and the factors to consider to enable them to select the correct type of access equipment.

WAIT is a simple, user-friendly web based toolkit which supports the user by providing clear linkages to other detailed HSE and Industry advice and guidance. It also includes additional resources such as case studies, videos and downloadable posters etc.

WAIT does not take into account specialised types of work at height and is aimed at the occasional user of more common types of access equipment.

The Policy Team would like to take the opportunity to thank colleagues for their valued help and support in delivering the Shattered Lives Campaign and promoting STEP and WAIT.
