Then demands chips in getaway bid

A fugitive sought sanctuary 40ft up a pylon and demanded police fetch him some chips – then made his getaway after eating them.

Drug courier Leigh Grant, who had been swigging beer during a four-hour stand-off, taunted police on Facebook within an hour of escaping after being cornered by officers.

The 34-year-old from Cannock, on the run from custody, had clambered up the communications tower to avoid pursuing officers and threatened to jump if anyone came near.

A large crowd gathered under the pylon, next to Cannock Chase’s landmark Pye Green Tower. Three fire engines and an ambulance also arrived on the scene.

Eventually, Grant promised to come down if someone fetched him some chips.

But after receiving the £1.45 treat from Pye Green Fish Bar, the fugitive requested that all emergency vehicles be moved back from the scene.

Onlookers watched incredulous as Grant scrambled down the pylon and made his getaway to a waiting car.

Grant, who had recently been living in Plant Crescent, Stafford, has since been arrested.
