Watch Manager - Alan MorganFIREFIGHTERS rescued maintenance workers from a tunnel after a gas leak.

Three of the men had managed to escape the disused Harecastle railway tunnel in Kidsgrove by the time crews arrived at 11.25am yesterday. They were treated by paramedics for dizziness and nausea.

Firefighters in breathing apparatus went into the tunnel to rescue the other two, one of whom was taken to hospital.

Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service watch manager, Alan Morgan, pictured, said: "The five maintenance workers were in the tunnel when one of their gas alerters activated.

One of the men collapsed and his colleague stayed with him and was assisting him when we arrived."

Following the incident the entrance to the tunnel was closed and work inside stopped until the Health and Safety Executive arrived.
